You are coming to the Art Trail next weekend. But are you sure how you will be getting around?
Walking and cycling are options, obviously. The Trail is about four miles from Balerno to Colinton. And you already know about the electric Rickshaw service being offered between Colinton and Juniper Green. You need to go to the Information Hub at the pop-up cafe in Spylaw Park to get that. You can also pick up brochures and map/prize draw sheets there.
You have your copy of the brochure . You have the map sheet with the grid for collecting stamps on the back. You want to visit as many studios as possible to increase the value of the prize you can win.

You’ll be familiar with our public bus services in the area. We’ve already talked about the virtues of the good value Day Ticket. This lets you hop on and off different buses as you need them. Just £5.50 for the day (or £5 if you use your “tap tap cap” with your bank card).
“But which buses get me where?” I hear you cry. Time for our handy “cut-out-and-keep” bus and studio map.

There are 10 magnificent studios containing 18 lovely artists as detailed in the brochure . There is also a summary table of which artists are in which studio in a previous article.
The map above is in the style of a London Tube map. That is, the distances are not to scale, but you can see which services get you where. The blue line is the Water of Leith which has a walkway all way along between Colinton and Balerno.
The bus services go in both directions. So you can start where you like. But be aware that the 16 bus has different routes in each direction (see arrows on map). Therefore, see a suggested route below if visiting all studios by bus.
The 44 bus service covers studios 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
The 45 (not Sunday) gets you near studios 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
On the Sunday, when the 45 is not running. You can get the 18 between Juniper Green Gillespie Crossroads and Colinton. Viewfield Rd or Spylaw Avenue stops for Juniper Green, Colinton Village stop for Colinton.
Most efficient route by bus to see all
If you plan to visit all studios by bus, here’s the easiest order. Coming from the City Centre side on a 16 bus to visit studio 9 first. Get off at Thorburn Rd and it’s only a 5-min walk to studio 9. That same 16 bus continues to the terminus at Torphin which is where studio 10 is (Tiphereth Print Studio).
Coming back from studio 10, if you get the 16 bus it drops down into Colinton on Woodhall Rd. Notice that the 16 does not pass near studio 9 on the way back from the terminus. Instead, get off at the West Mill Rd stop for a 5-min walk to studio 7 (Pen Reid).
Studio 8 (Jennie Loudon) can be visited on foot from anywhere in Colinton. You can also visit the Information Centre at the Pit Stop Cafe (Spylaw Park, open 11am-3pm). Then get a bus towards Juniper Green (18 or 45 [not Sundays]). Alternatively, take the rickshaw service. Or you can also walk on Water of Leith Walkway, which takes about 25 minutes.
For studios 4 (Sandra Vick and Jade Stout), 5 (Jacqueline Watt and Ron Burnett), and 6 (Gill Walton), get off at the Woodhall Drive stop. You can also choose the Baberton Avenue stop. This depends on which direction you are travelling in to Juniper Green.
For studio 3 (Jenny Matthews) it’s the 44 or 45 buses. Get off at Bryce Road stops and consider visiting the Corner Cafe nearby.
For studio 2 (Gary Anderson, Soosan Danesh, Sheila Chapman) it’s the 44 bus. Get off at the Kinauld House stops.
For studio 1 (Janet Dyer) you need to get to the NTS Malleny Garden. To avoid the loop the 44 bus takes round Balerno, use the Balerno High School stops.
That’s it. Plan your route. Bring a friend, tell others who might be interested. The more the merrier! And its all free!
