Dorothy Black is a post graduate of Edinburgh College of Art who has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad with work held in many private and public collections. Renowned for powerful draughtsmanship and arresting images, work is characterised by a sense of duality. Strength versus vulnerability, dynamic form versus decoration, sinuous line against solid stance.
Exploring themes of adornment, the figure is used as a vessel for pattern and decor, presented ‘clothed’ in decorative elements which can represent textiles or creep outwith the confines of a garment onto skin, tattoo-like.
Another constant passion is the power and cyclical growth of nature. Shells and sea creatures mingle with organic forms and botanicals, represented in a vibrant, expressive and energetic manner to make a bold visual statement from bud to withered decay.
