Maria Maruaga

Drawing inspiration from the temperamental beauty of the Scottish coastline, the artist transforms stoneware and porcelain into vessels of movement. The work centers on the Mediterranean tinaja, reimagined through a rhythmic “push and pull” of the clay that mimics a dance under the pressure of a storm. These forms emerge beautifully deformed yet resilient, capturing the capacity to be shaped by the elements while remaining profoundly receptive. Each piece serves as a tactile record of the artist’s hands, echoing the sea’s raw energy through a palette of salt-crusted whites and organic browns, reminiscent of churning foam, layered with charcoal tones and metallic infusions.

A graduate of Robert Gordon University, the artist’s practice is deeply rooted in the exploration of form and atmosphere. Recent showcases of this evocative work include exhibitions at the Maclaurin Art Gallery in Ayr and the Kirkcudbright Galleries. This ongoing collection continues to investigate the delicate boundary between structural strength and organic vulnerability.
